ABOUT

"Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited to all we know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand." ~ Albert Einstein.

I'm Jacintha Kalpana Biesek — a multidisciplinary researcher, curator, and educator based in Singapore. My practice sits at the intersection of visual cultures, conservation, and art history, with a particular interest in how materiality, memory, and identity surface through both artistic and archival forms.

Alongside my work in curatorial research and conservation, I find joy in documentation — through photography, illustration, and visual storytelling. Whether preserving an artefact or sketching a moment, I’m drawn to the quiet power of detail and the traces that linger beneath the surface.

Underpainting, my curatorial research project-turned-podcast, extends these questions through conversations with artists, conservators, and cultural workers from Southeast Asia and Europe. It’s a space to explore the textures of art, memory, and repair — one layer at a time.

As Mark Rothko said, “A painting is not about an experience; it is an experience." Let my work tell you my story.
